This country has been under attack lately; People stomping on our flag and behaviors unbecoming of those whose freedom could be taken in an instant. It’s only when you don’t truly understand the value of something that you will disregard it or take advantage of it.

This country is continually fought for by the men and women of our armed forces. They leave their homes, as barely adults, only to be put through rigorous physical, mental and emotional testing to create soldiers. These soldiers are meant to be unbreakable and selfless as they fight to uphold the foundations of which this country was created.

It was due to the Civil War that national cemeteries were created. Many of these soldiers were unidentified bodies brought home to be given the honor of a decent burial and memorial.  It was Waterloo, New York that was named as the official birthplace of Memorial Day because of the standard of honor they offered these fallen soldiers. This town would close ALL of their businesses so the community could go and decorate the grave sites of each soldier. There was no memorial day sale or barbecue to rush to, it was simply to remember and be thankful for the men who gave their lives so others could live freely.

The highest form of love is when you sacrifice yourself for someone else. These men and women today deserve our honor. They leave their homes and families to fight for something that we didn’t, yet we get to enjoy it every day. They carry the burden of our freedom so we can live and enjoy it.

The truth is: “As long as there is man, there will always be war”. That’s what Albert Einstein determined. If there will always be war, then we will always need soldiers. Our freedom will always be at stake. We will always need to fight, because if we don’t fight we will die. So unless you’re willing to put your life on the line for people you don’t know, put down your hamburger and don’t try and find the best sale. Stop yourself and thank a soldier. Visit their grave and say a heartfelt thank you to the families that lost a brother, sister, wife, husband, father or cousin to save your life.

And if you think you have a right to step on our flag or that soldiers aren’t worthy of your honor, feel free to leave this country any time you’d like and thank a soldier that you have the freedom to do so.

Happy Memorial Day! Make it a safe and respectful day and GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!
