In October of 2012 social media was litered with colored and creative pctures to “Pray for New Jersey” and “Pray for New York” or those affected by Hurricane Sandy. A few months later, additional colored photos emerged informing us to “Pray for Newtown” and the horrible devastation that occurred there. Still only a few months after that “Pray for Boston” was the newest cry erupting from our screens. Today, we “Pray for Oklahoma City”…Amen.
It’s amazing how many prayer requests are being thrown around for a nation that pushed God away years ago. It also amazes me how many people turn to prayer only when devastation hits. Prayer is a deliberate communication with God whether in word or action but we seem to only do it after trouble strikes. Prayer connects you with God the very minute you utter those initial words – He actually hears you. God – the creator of the universe and everything in it – can hear your words.
I wonder what would happen if we prayed before it was too late? If an entire army of us would send urges and request to pray for the entire world, not because there’s a clear devastation but because devastation could come at anytime. What if we did this everyday instead of when we felt like it because we were moved with emotion? Is that what it takes? To pray only when we feel like it?
Do we stop praying because we didn’t get our answer that moment? Like a child that begs for a toy from their parents when it’s not time yet to play. Moreover, do we stop praying because we didn’t get the answer we wanted? Like winning the lottery for someone wo clearly can’t handle what little finances they may have?
I believe we should pray for these cities, not just today but everyday! Not just the cities that have been faced with calamity but every city and town in the world. Let’s pray for this nation and for the safety of these people. Let’s pray against natural disasters and men with evil intent. Let’s trust that God knows more than us and everything He does for a specific reason and purpose. Let’s pray for our own family members and friends that they’re safe every day in all that they do and wherever they go. Let’s pray before it’s too late…
One thing is for sure, though. At least the people of this nation know where to turn when trouble does attack. At least there are those who know that the only help we can really count on comes from a force so much higher than ourselves and this world. At least when we are faced with devastation we’re still turning to God to pray. That means there’s hope… this nation still has hope… let’s pray for it.
