My dad would get so mad at me when I left the garage door open. I was the first born and only girl of four children so when I was old enough to drive I had the privilege of getting the third and final garage to use. I never meant to keep it open, but the little trigger on the door wouldn’t work and the motor would pull the door up after it closed. He’d always tell me to wait until the door stayed closed before driving off – clearly I didn’t always do that because we had this argument more than once.
Today I always wait until the garage door is fully closed before I leave. It took 12 years but the lesson actually stuck. Naturally Dad was right, not just about the physical garage door but also in regards to life.
We should never be so busy or pre-occupied that we don’t take time to secure those things that are most precious to us. By leaving the garage door open anyone could have walked into my home to take or destroy whatever they wanted. My dad always taught us that nothing was so important that you had to rush to and leave yourself vulnerable. He wanted us to take our time, be careful and pay attention.
John 10:10 – “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” and with an open garage that’s pretty easy but by being patient and waiting until the door is secured and closed I’m protecting my assets, life and family. Ecclesiastes 10:8 says “and one who breaks through a hedge the serpent shall bite.” If I just take a little time in my day to acknowledge God, pray and use wisdom I’ll protect what God has given me. I’ll be able to enjoy my life because nothing has been destroyed and I can use what I’ve been given because nothing was stolen.
Who would have known my dad could teach me such a lesson in a garage door?
